In a previous writing of mine, ‘Why do you wear the veil?’ I have tried to elaborate on a reason why some ‘girls’ wear the veil covering except the eyes. To recap, in that writing I mainly concentrated on a meeting I had with a friend of mine, during which she explained how her life had been, and the sequences that resulted in her wearing the veil. Based on the conversation we had and based on other truths that I have heard, I concluded that many ‘girls’ wear the veil to hide; to hide from reality, to hide themselves from the face of the earth. A safer alternative to suicide perhaps! And a good one too; a method for a second chance!
The country that we live in, the Maldives, although small in size, consists of all types of people. Believers, Non Believers, Atheists, Agnosts, Extremists, Christians, Buddhists, Satanists, so on and so forth! It is a never ending list. Though, we are described as a tiny dot on the vast map of the world, this tiny dot consists of every good and bad that the whole world has ever known. And in fact, the bad is more than the good here in the tiny dot. Surely, the fact that most of the people are living in fear, the murders, the gang fights, rapes, child abuse, child molesting etc. are in fact evidence to what I have just mentioned.
In this tiny society, where white, black and every color in-between exists, we could not rest, but be assured that we are in a grave danger, every moment, and all the time. There are people with tattoos, colored lengthy hair, wearing all sorts of dreadful cloths, knives and box cutters in their pockets, smoking weed day and night. These people, when we see them we know how dangerous they could be and mainly it is such people who commit numerous sinful acts.
Then, there are people who should be bringing calmness to the eyes of the people. The religious people who are supposed to be away from sinful acts, and reaching this point, is where the question ‘what is behind the veil?’ comes to my mind. Within a society where there are numerous criminals, the veil could be an ultimate covering to commit several of the sinful acts.
Around the world, at this very period in time, we hear resolutions been passed to ban the wearing of veil because criminal acts are been carried out by people wearing the veil.
Although we refer to the Maldives as a 100% Islamic country from facts we know that the Maldives is nothing near to an Islamic society. It certainly is a mixture of beliefs. And in a society such as ours, the allowing of the veil could have devastating effects. Although it has not become ‘that serious’ several of the veiled are been caught shop-lifting. Let us consider it a beginning. We do not know, may be tomorrow we’d hear on the news, a veiled person has murdered a pedestrian! Who knows!
The fact is that, with in this society where criminal acts are at a high level, the veil is not as safe as we might think. What is behind the veil? Is it sincerity, loyalty and ‘taqwa’, or is it criminals, molesters, abusers, murderers? We do not know! And till there is a clear line between both, the veil is not safe.

@Irfaa- r u sane?We should ban both the extremes.Only banning the ppl with “dreadful cloths” as u put it or banning ppl who smoke just won’t do.We must ban ppl who in the name of religion commits murder n all other creative sins available to man kind!
