Does Islam refute evolution?

In a previous writing of mine with the same title, ‘does Islam refute evolution?’ I have looked into the issue of evolution in a logical and Islamic perspective. Why some of the sheikhs get so enraged on the theory of evolution for me is a mystery! It is a real mystery, because I see no evidence against evolution from the Quran or the Sunnah. In my previous article, I used the example of human size at the beginning (from the revelations) as an evidence of evolution. This writing could be considered an elaboration or a continuation of the previous writing.

If we think with an open mind – open in the sense let us not see science as an opposition to religion, let us believe that science is facts and religion supports facts, and let us believe that we are supposed to think and learn by experience and by exploring – and look around the world and ask our self the question, ‘is there any reason why evolution is not possible?’ the only actual answer that would come to the mind is, ‘I do not know’ or ‘ there is no reason to refute evolution’.

Our surrounding and we – the human race – itself proves the possibilities of evolution. As mentioned in the previous writing, the fact that we have been physically shrinking and mentally growing is a fact that evolution is in progress. And till the end of time, it might be ongoing.

The problems regarding evolution arises when the talks of apes comes, I assume. The phrase, or the belief that ‘humans came from apes’ is a huge issue as it is stated in the Quran that Allah created Adam from clay and that Adam is the first human that the earth has seen.

It is stated in the Quran, ‘We are relating unto you the most beautiful of stories in that what We have revealed to you from the Quran, though before it you were from among those who were not aware of them.’ (12:3)

And, ‘And all that We relate to you of these stories of the Messengers, We strengthen with them your heart. Through them there comes to you the truth as well as admonition and reminder to all those who believe.’ (11:12)

From the above versus, we understand that in the Quran there are stories which we are not aware of. And these stories are not fantasies, but true stories from the Almighty with lessons within them. By exploring these stories and by thinking about them deeply we would be able to understand truths that we have never known before. For instance the revelations on finger tips, the growth of a baby etc. are stories in the Quran. Unfortunately it is the non-believers who found out the facts through research, explorations and experiments. This we call science.

It is because Muslims ignored science, and because Muslims viewed science as an enemy, and because Muslims ignored the fact that Allah ordered them to explore and learn, the Muslim society is in such a low state. Every fact in the Quran is found by non believers, yet whatever scientific truth they find is already mentioned in the Quran. What not? Even the theory of Big Bang!

And these stories are mentioned in the Quran not only to be recited, but to be explored and their lessons to be learned. That is why Allah states, ‘There is, indeed, in their stories lessons for people endowed with understanding. It is not any invented tale, but a confirmation of what went before it, and a detailed exposition of all things, and a guide and a mercy to ye people who believe.’ (12:111)

In this revelation, Allah states the stories as a ‘detailed exposition’, which in fact means that every story comes with details, explanations and descriptions for those who think about the meaning . . . the hidden meanings!

And in the beautiful story of the creation of Adam, Allah states, ‘And We have indeed created you and then gave you a shape…’ (7:11) Some scholars try to make it seem as if Adam was created in a single day, entered into Paradise the same day, and send down to earth on the same day. But if we look deep into the above revelation, we would be able to note the words, ‘…created you and gave you shape…’ Here, Allah did not simply mention that He created Adam; rather meaningfully He mentioned that He created Adam and gave Adam a shape.

From this we understand that there was a creation, and then a shaping! What we do not know is how it was done or how long it took for the completion of Adam.

We know how accurate, how mathematical and how formulated everything is created. The application of 1.618 (PHI) in several of the creations is just one example. The uniqueness in human features such as the finger prints; eyes, the network of nerves etc are few examples of the Creators wisdom, knowledge and creativity!

This beauty and mathematics in creation surely forces us to believe that there is a creator, and that is Allah. But again, how was Adam created? Just with a snap! Be and Adam came into existence? Allah is capable of everything, Be and it would be! But till this moment, till now and even tomorrow and till the end, there are and there will be reasons. For everything there is a reason. There is mathematics; there are logics, behind every creation, every action. It is with an action a reaction occurs.

And as Allah has mentioned, Adam was ‘created and given a shape’. If at first Adam was created as Adam, the human with all the perfect features, than is there a need for shaping? Perhaps, Allah created the genetics, the DNA’s, the cells; the microscopic elements? We do not know, but whatever was created was molded and shaped in to Adam.

And also Allah has mentioned in the Quran that Adam was created from mud/clay. It is stated, ‘And We have created mankind out of sounding clay, from a molded mud’ (15:26)

And in this ayah, it is again mentioned a ‘molded mud’.

Therefore, from the mud – which has no life, nothing – to a perfect human with mathematical amazements, what were the events in between this process of creation? Could this process be referred to as evolution? And from hadith we know that Adam had a height of sixty cubits and lived for a thousand years! Today while a human has just a height of about 5.5 to 6 feet in average and a lifespan of 60 – 80 years, what physical and mental shapes could humans have experienced in between the time of Adam till today? These changes in shape and mentality, could it be not referred to as evolution?

I think these verses revealed has enough evidence that the Gods way to prolong life on earth is by the method evolution.

Years and years back, when the first phone was invented, there were scholars who denied the phone. Who prohibited the usage of phones! They argued that it was a devil speaking on the other end and not a real person! This was the result of lack of knowledge, lack of science, and this was the result of disobeying Allah when Allah commanded mankind to think, explore and learn. And one day, just like how the phone has been accepted, evolution might also be accepted.

you r selling religion for few bucks, lol, whttaa shame thadu! and remmemmmber ma words bro, anni will not pay u wht he promised

  • Seeker says:

Totally Agreed. Seek knowledge and we will find truth. Here is a verse that I understand evolution is described in the Quran; Surah Al-Noor (the Light), 24:45

“Allah hath created every animal of water. Of them is (a kind) that goeth upon its belly and (a kind) that goeth upon two legs and (a kind) that goeth upon four. Allah createth what He will. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things..”

This we can interpret as the stages of evolution of the living things from microorganisms in millions of years of evolution and adaptation to land based on the scientific facts. Is it not proof of evolution when water is able to be the basis (a starting point) of all known and unknown forms of animals (even man) when water has no resemblance to any animal form we know today. So what was the transformation processes and the time for that? Isn’t that what is known as evolution?

  • Midhuam says:

Theory evolution brought me more closer to God. It makes sense.
What is more Godly? Creating each organism with a ” blow ” spontaneously or through a much more systematic process. If God blows and make everything happen spontaneously as much of our blind believing Muslims think than I guess God should come out to work every morning at 8 to “wish” what would happen on that day. Is this Goldy. I think it is more Godly to let everything happen with a single formula. Isn’t it more Goldy for Him to let everything happen by a single vibration to a string. A single oscillation on a string that resulted Big Bang, formation of the universe, which eventually lead to what we see now. And even today things are happening according to the formula. It will go on until the last day which He has already decided. If God knows the reminder would it be difficult for Him to come up with an ingenious formula.
In general the more science I know the closer I am getting to God. Good work thad . . . .:)
