The Holy Bible

December 1st, 2008 § 10 comments

Recently a close buddy of mine, a young adult, was held by custom officers, investigated by police and further questioned by the Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr.Abdul Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari, for having in his luggage a Bible when he came to Male’ from India. The actual fact is that this young dude had this Bible in his possession for a very long time, and in fact he had it with him even when he went to India. Now this very dangerous book that should not be even touched, read or researched by any Maldivian is confiscated by the Maldivian security forces! (O! well done, well done! Yet the murderers roam freely with their swords, slaying humans day and night, every day!)

The one and only question that I would like to ask from the related authorities including the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Peoples Majlis and law enforcement authorities is, “what is the problem in owning a Bible?” In my understanding what ever law that disallows such and such things is baseless! The reason why I say so is because, Islam does not disallow reading or researching or learning other faiths. Secondly we as Maldivians have the freedom to express.

Elaborating on the above two points: As far as my knowledge is concerned, Islam allows exploration. In Islam a person has the rights and freedom to learn and gain knowledge. In fact, Islam supports and encourages learning and exploring. Also Islam requires that one understands ‘the world’ to a level that the person would be able to know and understand to tackle any allegations against Islam. Therefore at this very moment in time where any information could be easily accessible, one needs to know about other religions, particularly religions such as Christianity, in depth, so that one could decide if Islam is in fact the religion of truth!

Secondly what is the use of granting as a right, the freedom to express, if we are not allowed to learn? How could one possibly express feelings and thoughts, if they are not allowed to learn, understand and explore what they feel and what they think? This considered a reason; restriction in gathering knowledge is certainly conflicting with the freedom of expression law!

Therefore, I believe that every Maldivian should be able to learn and explore what ever materials they want to, as long as the people abide the laws and rules of the Maldives. Restricting knowledge, independent of the nature of the knowledge, is a crime against humanity, as knowledge is the concrete path for self development! This restriction will only result in people blind-following… And so, as a Human, and as a Maldivian, I call upon the Government of Maldives to revise such barbaric rules that restrict people from learning and gathering knowledge.

Hey Thadu.. You’re perfectly right about there being nothing unIslamic about reading the bible or possessing one.

But you forget that in the Maldives, Islam takes a whole new level of meaning! Like the first commentator here who wonders whether ur close relative follows Islam. I just wonder WTF business it is of this guy whoever follows Islam or not.

And to the third commentator here who’s worried about your ‘nasora dheen fethurun’ – the language, the insecurity and the sheer vindictiveness completely gives away the fact that this is a guy who has found no peace with Islam.

Oh. And add Abdul Majid Baree to that list of people.

As for the ridiculous laws of the country that allow weed, heroin, alcohol in unlimited quantities, but won’t allow a bible :p The less said the better!!

    could not agree more
there are more dangerous books for sale in bookshops
there are more dangerous people freely speaking
    so why not a bible?

  • mike says:

the bible has changed my life… it is a book of God’s love and the freedom His Son brought… Nations who do not want freedom for thier people would obviously try to stop a book that promotes freedom.

    God bless

  • Ahmed Shinau says:

First thing, Bible is not the best informative book of the son of the God ( Jesus ), Because the holy book of god ( Quran ) does better

Second thing, as you said if the bible was for the purpose education, I absolutely agree with you.

  • Ismail says:

I am a maldivian! bt i truly believe that they are misguided n blind! I bet the very people who declare themselves rightous watch porn, use slang language, n do other sinful activities in secret! They are hypocrites who want to show other’s they they are religious.I read the Bible & it has things that one can learn from. When a woman who had sinned was brought to Jesus and he was asked to punish her by stoning her to death, Jesus said “the one among you who have not sinned, let him throw the 1st stone”.Truly, who amongst us had not sinned? And isn’t Jesus our prophet? Why is it that we think it’s a SIN to mention his name?
