Today we are experiencing the early days of an end to a thirty year old dictatorship. Though the autocratic ruling by Maumoon Abdul Gayyom is over, many still believe that they are not seeing what they hoped for with the change. The change of the Government is doubtlessly the result of several individuals’ hard work. And several of these people who worked very hard today are complaining about not seeing ‘the envisioned future’!
In my personal point of view, I assume that the new government is trying to overhaul and make right the root causes of the social, political and other problems that Maldives is currently facing. Though this might be the case, like several other people, I also think that the government should establish temporary solutions to certain issues. Of course, several issues that we face today at Male’ is due to congestion. And a solution for this might be decentralization which will make Male’ less crowded.
The process of decentralization, creating of the ‘dhathuru fathuru ge nizaam’ will take years to be effective. Till then, there need to be solutions to the very serious issues that we face daily. Reading through the dailies, one would note that there are ‘daily’ cases of pedophiles, gang attacks, theft etc. And for many people, bringing such issues to an end is what they need most. And they need this immediately. It is a contentment to see that unlike the former government, the current government is not withdrawing the road blocks and patrolling police from the streets after the last murder case.
And speaking about other islands, most of them are fighting for three major things. That is a proper sewerage system, a proper port/harbor, and proper education. In addition water and electricity are also listed amongst the important issues brought up by the people of islands. Obviously, it is impossible to make everything perfect with in a couple of years. But still, a solution needs to be designed to stop people from shutting down rashu-offices and schools.
What I am trying to highlight is that the thinking of the government is not fully aligned with the thinking of the people. The people were more concentrating on the ‘side promises’, then the major five promises of the MDP manifesto. The people were expecting to see a safer Male’, safer islands ‘as soon as possible’. And they weren’t expecting to see drug addicts, pedophiles and such dispersed to the already crowded and ‘sinful’ land of Male’.
Such and such issues might be the result of not having a proper opposition to criticize the government. And creating a suitable opposition might not be the easiest at the moment! However, the results of the upcoming parliament election will be of high impact to direct the government to align with the thinking of the people.
Therefore my plea to every individual is that the parliament election, in a sense, is more important than the presidential election. So think before choosing a candidate. Choose the right candidate rather than the rich and famous. Choose well educated candidates who know what the people want. Make use of the freedom of speech to a maximum, and know that, to do so, one needs to learn how to use freedom of thought wisely.
