Who is who? Are you still confused?

October 5th, 2008 § 30 comments

Last couple days I was able to spend some time with several friends. Some of them I met face to face and some I talked online. One general question I asked all of them was “who will you be voting?” The purpose of me asking this question is to know and understand how prepared young people are for the election that is to be held after two days. Although we are just two days away from casting our votes, most of the answers I received from the people that I talked were similar. Most of them were at a state of confusion.

Some simply said that they have not yet decided. Others on the other hand mentioned some names, tried to look into cons and pros of the candidates. But as mentioned earlier, most of them were still confused. In my understanding there are several reasons for this, the main reason been that this is the first election where we are given the option to choose a single candidate from a list. And while this is the first, the list contains six names which make choosing a single name tougher.

With the limited time we have in hand, to choose the proper candidate will be a difficult task. However if we are able to learn about the candidates we might be able to take a rational decision. One way to do this is by looking in the past and the current situation. If we do so, we will see that some candidates have far forgotten the actual reason why they started all the sacrifices they have been sacrificing. And we would note that some candidates have switched parties and that is after praising their previous parties and after saying with farm beliefs that they will not give a chance to political parties at Maldives other then the party they belonged to. If we observe carefully we will notice that some candidates are simply ‘power hunger’. And we will note that Golhaa still wants the seat after thirty years of iron-fist ruling.

In contrast we would also note there are candidates who are genuine, who actually wants to help the Maldivians bring a change. Now that I have decided to support Qasim Ibrahim in the upcoming election here are a few reasons why I chose so and I will try to make it as short as possible. We know Qasim as a philanthropist who have been helping several people in several ways; educational, medical, business etc. And we know that he has been doing this for no personal needs but because he understands the feeing of the people who are so much in need of a change.

But I am not supporting Qasim because he has helped people. Yet I support him because he understands the feeling and needs of the people. And I support him because he has experience; he has experience in the political field, he has experience in development of this country, he has experience in understanding people’s needs and more. Also I support him because he is one person who never praised the dictator when he was in the dictators party (DRP). Meaning that he is himself where ever and when ever considered. He had and still has his beliefs; he is a person who loves this country.

And most importantly, what we need is not reaching new heights, and not travelling to another Maldives. The truth is very simple, what we need is a change, a small change that will make our lives brighter. Vote for a change, say no to Golhaa, and tick Candidate Number ONE on the 8th of October!

  • afzal says:

Qasim is a fucking dick head.. and will remain dick head for ever…

  • Alex says:

According to Gasim he was working from inside to bring about change to this nation. By him joining DRP he was able to become the speaker of the special Majlis. Most politicans would agree that if it were not for gasim the constitution still would not have been amended

we are not confused. u are trying to confuse us,,,,,,,,,,,,. dhan lalala

  • wahee says:

We are not confused on whom to vote. You are trying to get us confused and get us vote to a nutcracker like Gasim. He doesn’t fit to be a president of 20th Century.
Whom to vote is clear. That’s Dr. Hassan Saeed for many reasons. As he had highlighted in many of his speeches, at the moment no party is capable of forming a proper governement. At this moment we need someone who can bring capable people from different parties and form a government.
I give due credit to Anni. But I don’t belive Zaki, Maria and Afeef can form a fair government, Neither Gasim, Nor Ibra or Umar. The only soultion is Dr Hassan. Vote for Hassan. Vote for cahange. Vote for balance of power

  • Vigani says:

We the people of Maldives are today in a utter state of indecision. The candidates are making election promises some of which are almost impossible to fullfil. Some want to take us to new hights while others are promising to take us to Utopia. Most of our youth a already in a state of drunken hights. We defintely do not want to reach any new hights. Hights we were not able to reach in the past 30 years. In the Utopia promised one candidate vowed not more than a few month ago to pay all the outstanding money owed by poor Maldivians to the corner shops. Now that promise is forgotten. He never mentions it.Let us not be duped by politicians who are taking advantage of our naivity and innocence. Most most the candidates for the upcoming elections are bank rolled by big business interests.Be it the DRP, MDP, Dr. Hassan Saeed, or even the Republicans. Therefore I urge all Maldivians to consider all these factors before they caste their votes on the 8th Oct.I have made my decision. I am going to support Mr. Gasim for the simple reason that even though he is a big tycoon,he atleast understands the plight and the conditions of the poor Maldivians.I believe that out of the lot he is the most sincere and simple and down to earth person. Let the final decision be yours and yours alone.

  • bodunulafa says:

hehehe… Gasim? Philanthropist! Hmm..sounds he has had an ulterior motive forever!

hmm..the tycoon who has more than a dozen prime land in Male’ (il)legally leased one huge koshi from the government (when he was da Finance Minister) for peanuts while there were people who were willin to pay 10s of thousands! just a small example!

And what about da MTDC scandal! It is after all a scandal isn’t it? Or probably the philathropist got it so that Champa gang would not get it and he is plannin on distributin it to the poor maldivians at a later date?

Hmm… how about he got all his resort and fishery projects stuff duty free?! it’s a fact..n as soon as he brought all da stuff.. the duty was levied on da rest!! fair justice..

Hmm.. lets see.. Anni is the genuine candidate here (my opinion)… People are there in MDP who are capable of runnin this pico land! your just not lookin!

Madhu we all are nutcrackers!and my question is why Dr.hassan became a member of Golhaas dictatorship when he was capableand potential person for change the nation !! but that nutcracker was helped people since long time ,and has experiences by development of the country, finally Golhaa grab him and proposed the ministerial responsibilities of Golhaas regime, because of many reason Qasim involantarily accepted, even so he didnt give up and never forget about the needs and feelings of the poor nut people, and he had be patience untill amend the constitution.
“we all are nutcrackers we need a nutcraker for our head”

  • no name says:

ok.. i 2 agree gasim is fine..but you saying on your article that he never praised the dictator and trying to fool the people is wrong i think! because i have heard from it my own ears he praising the dictator on a bank function while he was in DRP..so??..is he a person having his own beliefs wherever and whenever he is considered??i don’t think so..but yes!!he is better than the dictator or the one promising to go to “minikaa raahjje”..he is among the OK candidates..it’s you maldivians who will decide whom you will elect to dominate you..so vote to decide and choose the right one..by the way i support hassan saeed and gaasim too!!heheh

  • Reef says:

Hey Thudu,……this is what we called misleading. The reasons you have highlighted to support Gasim surely have no substance. Here are 10 good reasons not to support Gasim. You cant beat any of them.
    1. He doesn’t have required leadership quality to become a president
    2. He is simply not qualified for the job – doesn’t know even how to speak in proper English
    3. He doesn’t have a sound understanding of our economy – He chaosed economy.
    4. He is not willing to introduce a tax system in Maldives, which is the very basics any economy
    5. His primary target is to provide 99 year lease for tourist resorts.
    6. It is impossible for him avoid conflict of interest when he runs the government, even though he transferred title of all his businesses to his children.
    7. He doesn’t know even his own children – like an animal, he keep on making children with several people.

damn… kalo kon dhuniye egga tha thiulhunee… mi raajjey ga ulhunu nama gasim golha buree ga dhoo lee than ves fenifa hunnaanee…
people say gasim is a self-made philanthropist but those who accept the truth know that his wealth is the result of golha’s patronage…
and as for him having the best interest of us common folk well you dont need to see beyond MTDC…

Qasim is fighting a loosing battle. He doesn’t have a chance in this election.

  • He-He says:

I try to refrain myself from being involved in any politics. But i just want to make one thing really clear to all of you.Fact is all politicions LIE.

No matter who wins the elections…people would still suffer…crime rate wont decrease….corruption would still exist…human rights would be violated…
Better yet…in 50 years time Maldives would be beneath the waves.

Dont be naive and pathetic enough to believe a change of presidency would bring with it utopia.
My adives…sell your votes for the largest amount and migrate to another country!!

    Maldives is a sinking ship…
    Choice is yours….SINK OR SWIM?

  • MrMv says:

Adaalath party chose gasim for a reason. First of all its not money, they have vowed to upheld islam values thus Gasim is the best candidate against all. My Vote is for Gasim! and its not for sale.
Enough of Maanu and Dr Hassan.

Thank you, Mr Thadu. Thank you, thank you, and once again thank you. You have shown us the right path. Such a noble man. We are not real lovers of Maldives.

Infact Buruma Gasim is one who loves Maldives and Maldivians so much, he hardly sleeps thinking over the sufferings we go through daily. And he has almost dedicated all his life for the betterment of our people. I pray to God Almighty that He welcomes this philanthropist along with his friendly Talibs to everlasting paradise with thousands houris at their disposal.

Thadu, I hope you get a ticket along with the saints.

  • Fazeel says:

Simon you gotta be kiddin me. Gasim never cheered Gayoom? He’s been doing that in different occasions in the past decades. Maybe not when he was in DRP, cause he had this long planed drop out arranged. Don’t be fooled Gasim had wanted power long long time ago. Many had reported him saying that he has money whats missing is power.
