Golhaa was able to secure a 40% in the first round of 2008 presidential election is a fact. Was it a genuine 40% is another topic! But the important thing for the moment is, even if it was genuine, what does it actually mean? People like Nasheed (Kutti) have said that it is evidence that Golhaa still has a high percentage of support despite the fact that the whole opposition was against him. But here are my thought on the 40%…
During the past thirty years, when Golhaa played the ‘one man show’, he did secure over a 90% of votes during each election. And no matter how exposed he was during the last election, and despite the fact that several other candidates were competing against him, it was his high aim to acquire a 90% of votes and win in the first round of voting. Unfortunate for Golhaa, his hopeful 90% turned out to be just a 40%! Fact one: From a 90% to a 40%, that is a 50% loss of support. And therefore, the opposition did succeed in that point of thinking.
Fact two: No matter how much Golhaa and his people do not want to accept, that fact is 60% of Maldivians voted for a change. They are sick and tired of Golhaa’s autocratic dictatorship. The only reason why the opposition was unable to oust Golhaa in the first round was, because the people of Maldives were divided in picking the right candidate. And that it by no means an advantage for Golhaa! Why?
Because… Who will vote who in the second round of voting? The people of Maldives know and understand that it is still the same people who are competing. The only difference is that, in the first round the ballot paper had six names, but in the second round it will have only two names.
In the first round also, the six names represented two teams. That is the Golhaa team and the opposition team. In the second round also, it is these two teams that will be competing. The 60% that decided not to vote for Golhaa will still not vote for him. Why? The answer is simple; they are still thinking wise and praying for a change.
The fact that there will be only tow names on the ballot paper in the second round of voting brought only one change. That is unity; the unity of the opposition team and the unity of the Maldivian people. Thus it is only a disadvantage to Golhaa and his team. It is doubtful if the 40% who voted for Golhaa would vote to him this time. Why? The answer again is simple; those who voted for him thought that because of the division in the opposition at that time, there is no way that the opposition would win, and they had a farm belief that Golhaa would win in the first round. And most of these people might have been people favored by Golhaa in several different ways.
However, now they have a reason to believe that the majority of Maldivians are not with him anymore. And they do understand that Maldivians need a change, and they will be a part of the change in the second round of voting!
In a nutshell, if the 40% means anything, it only proves that how much the people of Maldives are in need of a change! Vote wise, vote Anni, vote “Wathan Edheygothah”!
-thadu-
I’m confident that we are on our way to Wathan Edheygothah…
The educated and most knowledgeable community is with us. And knowledge is power.
I urge those in the islands who are going Wathan Edheygothah to lend a helping hand to their fellow citizens to join the Grand Coalition in this march towards a better life. Teach our beloved citizens not to sell their vote for a one time deal of fake notes.
Teach them to VOTE FOR A CHANGE!! Give them confidence they’ll never be left alone like before.
yes v all need a change,
golhabo ah vaa ehkamehvs noavey hama ekani foni huvafenthah dhakaa hiyalee folaaa kahkaneee
my vote goes to anni
Not matter what Golha and Minakude ge Firihenkulihi Thasmeen, say, WE ARE CHANGING AND THIS IS THE FINAL CALL TO MAUMOON AND FIRIHENKULHI THASMEEN. Find your way out of this election or accept that they are looses and will not be able to get even 10% vote from the Mr/Mrs Maldivians.
Your TIME is up and BYE BYE GOLHA & HIS firihenkulhi Thasmeen
hmm wat does the 40% means right? thats means definitly 40% of the Maldivias want Maumoon and 60% doesn’t want him
but what does the 24% anni got means. why nobody is talking abt this. does this mean. does this mean that 72% of Maldivians want Anni or 75% rejected him. if so who won. If rejected who won. Maumoon or Anni.
Cumon guys be practical. think before u talk. don’t get so much blinded in ur dreams of seen a change, so much so that u can not see what is happening to u beloved country.
Pls think 100 times before u vote. i am 100% sure though i badly want a change i wud not choose Anni instead of Maumoon.
Maumoon still much much better than Anni who is rejected by 72% of maldivians.
i wud say VOTE FOR MAUMOON to save the country.
correction “does this mean that 72% of Maldivians want Anni or 72% rejected him.”
@ Sia: If u read the article carefully you would have found the answer for your question.. “…The only reason why the opposition was unable to oust Golhaa in the first round was, because the people of Maldives were divided in picking the right candidate…”
It does not mean, they are against Anni, but they might have seen Hassan Saeed or Qasim as better candidates then Anni. But now, they are all together, Maldivians does not need to think twice, they are all a group!
If some one is a supporter of Hassan, a vote to Anni in this round also means a vote to Hassan, and same goes with Qasim or Ibra…
Each one teach one- 60000 voters can make 120000 votes. just do you your part each one convince one independent voter to vote for Anni in the second round. The winning is as simple as that . Do your part ….
website looks nice with the Wathan Edhey Gothah banner
My dear winner,
Ask youreslf, why were the maldivian people divided in picking the right candidate in the first round?
Dear winner,
Ask yourself why the Maldivian people were divided in picking a candidate in the first round. Here,….made easy for you.
1- Maldivians were stupid.
2-Maldivians just wanted to play a game and spend some money by going to a second round
3- 40 % of maldivians were stupid.
4-The so called unity was never understood by the leaders who joined MDP after the failure of the first round.
6-Anni could not persuade them to help him at that time and greed took over.
7-Nobody believed in Anni…not even Ibra.
Now about the 60 and 40%. The matter of the fact is that every one who voted wanted a change including the 40% who voted for your Golhaa.
The difference my dear is, that they wanted a change through Golhaa
and about 25% wanted the change through Anni. Is this hard to understand?
And if anybody thinks that the 40% who voted for Golhaa are stupid, there really is a serious problem…..IN DEMOCRACY
@thadu
Your line of thinking is based on the ASSUMPTION that 60% who voted for the candidates other than Maumoon, will not vote for Maumoon over Anni. This is an assumption erroneous and false. Surely, there will be people who voted to Dr Hassan who will compare Anni with Maumoon and will opt to vote for Maumoon. And likewise with the Gasim voters. the common folks, the voters who passionately follows Hassan, Ibra or Gasim voted for their choice kos they wanted their choice of candidate as President. They knows the difference that exists between each and Anni.
Also however fanciful it sounds, a vote to Anni will not be a vote to Hassan or Gasim or Ibra..for obvious reasons if you just think with your mind for one second.
From 6 contestants 40% voted for gayyoom and others got a pitifully low percentage compared even with the 40%. Anni got only 25%. Simply put 40% preferred Maumoon over the rest of candidates. 25% preferred Anni over the rest of candidates and etc..the statistic shows nothing more, nothing less.
If your argument hold valid, what is the purpose of all this watan edheygothah campaigns with all the high expenses..they now have a comfortable 60%. NO NOT.. The truth is opposition is still unsure. All the recklessness from Anni..all the pleading (yes..aadheys) from Gasim.. shows this. This is the truth.
The 60% decided against Maumoon talk is just political rhetoric and nonsense. Simply put, nobody decided against anybody in this election. Everybody voted FOR somebody.
btw, i like your blog. But it would be more nice and professional if you dont use derogatory names, even to Maumoon ( obviously someone you dont like).
RedBull is very right. Opn your eyes wide and see. Its difficult to belive in things we dont want. But we have to be realistic. Lets see what happens
if hassan and Qasim id better than Anni, why shud we vote Anni. why not anni step back and give the chance to hassan who is more educated and more compitent. hehe…
how can than be done we wall are dieing for power right. spc Anni.
my last coment is for thadu
I never said Hassan or Qasim is better then Anni. What I said is that some might see Hassan or Qasim better then Anni. Anyhow, that is the previous round of voting. This time they are all together, independent of a supporter of Hassan or Qasim or Ibra, there is no harm in voting Anni, because they are a team now.
And Anni can not step down, because if he does, then automatically Maumoon would be elected as the president. I assume, the opposition did the best thing by uniting together!
ANd like I mentioned before, a vote for Anni, is also a vote for Hassan, Qasim, Ibra… and most importantly it is also a vote for “wathan edhey gothah”
hey wake up thadu gandu.. anni is no better than maumoon, I will not vote for anni. First round i didn’t vote for maumoon. But now voting muamoon is better than voting anni. The article just tell me one thing. This is what you want. We don’t need a change with anni. we rather chose the devil we know over the unknown devil.
40% represents people who are getting benefits directly and indirectly from maumoon and cronies.
otherwise they would not have voted, deep inside they all hate maumoon and family.
28 october akee dhivehinge aa minivan dhuvas kamugaa hadhamaa
first of all, the article was great……
to all against ANNI, i ask you if you can justify clearly why???? some how i doubt if you can..the only reasons i can think of is that some of you has ties with the dictator..or simply becuase you don’t know any better…probably you are not even familiar with basic political concepts, if so, you are certainly among the incapable or should i say crippled citizenry. also those who think it requires one to have a doctorate to run the country or lead the people……….did gandhi have one? did mandela? did martin luther king? jefferson? washington? lets look at today…does bush have one? obama? clinton? blair? does anyone? …how come all those rocket scientists and doctors and professors in america, never run for for president? simply because they are not leaders..they would do better off inventing or making bombs heh heh, or teaching in universities, writing books etc.etc….
to run a country we need someone who can lead us, i am not saying education is not necessary. just that it shouldn’t be the measure.we should not judge one’s ability to lead, based on educational achievement.moreover it should be based on action. and i believe Anni is that leader.the reason why you can see more political leaders today is Anni.he is our savior.
to shakewellbeforeuse….your very first point was “maldivians are stupid”,yet you end your comment writing…. “if anybody thinks that the 40% who voted for Golhaa are stupid, there really is a serious problem” are you talking about yourself?? you are not making any sense!!!but don’t worry i don’t expect you to..
its one thing for you to be dumb and ignorant but your pathetic attempt to promote the dictator is an insult to everyone with a functioning brain. do everyone a favor and keep your advice to yourself..its no good in the rational world…….
hehec ome on guys… it seems lyk the rest 60% is 4 anni… ;p
no no… its nt lyk dat. n u vl c it in the nxt round. its maumoon who is gonna win insha allah.
