Don’t be fooled: From dreams to a reality!

Today we are experiencing a transitional period. YESTERDAY we were slaves. Our hands were tied, our lips taped. We were living in a dream. Our informative resources were blocked. We were kept in the dark. We were taught that Golhaa was the one and only person who is capable of ruling this country. We were made to believe that Golhaa was the only religious scholar in this country. Once in every five years Golhaa would visit islands, and show the same dreams over and over again, dreams that he has been showing since he came to power. Our harbors, our schools, our health centers and hospitals etc, remain a dream. Yet we somehow trusted Golhaa and casted our vote to him even though he made the same promises every now and then, promises that he never fulfilled. And those who realized that Golhaa was making empty promises; when they wanted to vote against Golhaa they were forced to leave the voting zones, or they were forced to change their vote. And those who spoke their mind and those who tried to make people aware of Golhaas dictator style were tortured, jailed and killed.

TODAY with the help of a brave people, things have changed. We are able to speak freely; we have obtained a certain level of democracy. And one major change we are experiencing today is the multiparty system. The election that is to be held on October 8th is the first election under these new changes and freedom. And several candidates are competing. Amongst the candidates Golhaa still remains. Even though he has ruled six terms, he still does not want to give up. Beloved Maldivians! He still repeats his promises and claims that he will be able to do everything in five years, that he was unable to do in thirty years. Dear friends, let us not be fooled by the dictator yet again. Enough is enough, and so lets vote for a change. Today is the day we should not forget how Golhaa treated the poor people, or perhaps how Golhaa made our people poor! Look at the islanders! Those who live at Male’ or Hulhumale’ might actually not know or understand the poor situation islanders are living today.

TOMORROW what we want is to change our lives. We want to step forward and move from dreams to a reality. What we need is not a promise saying that we will soon get better health facilities, education…life. Rather, what we need is a better life. To move from dreams to a reality the first and foremost obstacle we need to tackle is Golhaa! He might visit you, make more promises, and give you some cash! But don’t be fooled! That is who he is. That is what he has been doing for all these years. To make our dreams a reality we need to elect a capable person as our president. We need to elect someone who is selfless and someone who understands the feelings and needs of the poor Maldivians. Think twice before you cast your vote on October 8th 2008. And just remember that goal number one is to get rid of Golhaa! Our fate is in our hands! Vote for a change…

there are too many to claim the ownership of internal and external reform , but the truth is that qasim has been reforming the minds of all the youth..he has helped so many young people to realize sound education, it is the most powerful tool and the weapon that can transform a nation…i call upon all the maldivians to think deep about this… the true father of reform is qasim…he has a heart to listen to the pathos of every maldivian in pain,he has achieved success through compassion , not by ruthlessness…..

i partly agree with the comment by niyaz…but seems he missed out an important factor….
we all know how brutal the dictator was…we were deprived of our natural rights.it was a crime to even have an opinion on government policies etc.we were in dire need of a savior, we needed some one to stand up for our rights. its not like we didn’t have educated people in the maldives, but rather we didnt have anyone with the courage to lead us.
i appreciate what Anni has done for us far more than the generous help Gasim provided many with.
Anni is and will go down in history as the man who led us to freedom & democracy.and its really funny that we question his capability today…

but then again if we are to sustain democracy , we would need an informed and engaged citizenry, i personally think civics should be taught in schools.

“Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers…. The people themselves therefore are its only safe depositories. And to render even them safe, their minds must be improved.” thomas jefferson
