Ramadan, Devils and the chains!

September 2nd, 2008 § 7 comments

While skimming through a book titled “A Gift for Muslim Women” I came across a saying of the prophet Mohamed, “Hazrath Abu Huraira reports the Messenger of Allah as saying:’ When the month of Ramadan dawns, the gates of heaven are opened and those of hell closed and the devils are shackled in chains’” (Bukhari, Muslim).

It is not something new to me; I did hear that several times in several occasions. And I always wondered why people still continue committing sins and wrongdoings in the month of Ramadan! If it were the devils that make people sin, and if the devils are chained in the month of Ramadan, how and why people continue with their falsified lives? Should they not be clean from sins? Should not they live a pious life? But unfortunately, for us, the month started with the burglary of Megachip showroom!

Though, some would try to explain the reasons in many different ways, I think the accurate reason is that because our actions are not governed by devils or angels. But our acts are completely our own decisions, and we commit a crime when we chose to do so and we do a good deed when we chose to do so! And I feel that it is time we believe this fact, and not show excuses for the crimes we commit, saying that it was forced upon us by a devil.

Might it be Ramadan or might it not be Ramadan, agree on this fact and we might see, perhaps, a bit better society starting to evolve. We need to understand that what we do is not controlled by God or a devil, we are free people and we do what we do on our own. We can make choices. No devil could stop us, no would God interfere (If God controls us, how unfair is it to create a heaven and a hell). If we are to blame on a devil our deeds and doings … that sound more like a joke! How insane it sounds, to call our selves the most intelligent beings and yet we assume we have no power to live our lives as we intend to!

    Thadu,
With this kind of thinking you are treading the clear waters of disbelief. No sooner than you can imagine you’d have arrived on the shores of reason and suddenly everything will be as clear as in daylight.

The concept of freewill is a weird one. Islam tries to lay claim to it by saying that god gave us freewill to do good or bad. But it also claims that it is impossible for god NOT to know what our future actions are going to be. After all, if god didn’t know how future actions then he isn’t an omniscient god.

Anyhoo, thus spoke the devil. :)

Disbelief? in Islam? or God?…hehe ‘Confess my Son’!!

Looks like the Reverend has parked his kennel in your blog thadu. Notice how this fellow tries to give the illusion that his words are full of wisdom, but ends up saying essentially nothing of substance.
I fail to see how Free Will & Omniscient is at odds.

  • haqqu says:

    hello thadu
are you trying to earn the wrath of almighty?

  • salom says:

i dont see anything wrath rewarding in this article. infact what you have written is very good. every muslim should listen to this to make a better society. God bless you

  • muslimah says:

come on! fools like u will believe what was written is good. we hav our free will, if we want to go in the right path Allah will guide us. Allah created heaven 4 those who do believe n do good in this world. n hell for those who disbelieve n do bad in this world. how unfair will it be if a person (who kills people without any reason, who robs, who worships other than who created him) dies without being punished in this world! therefore the hereafter is waiting for him to be brought up to justice. how dare u talk such things about who created u, gave u sight, gave u hearing! who will give it back to u if they r taken away frm u? can a human being, an idol, or an animal give it back? u r a helpless person being ungrateful towards who created u! i m a muslim n i will not listen 2 what has been said in this article. i m submitting my will to Allah who created me n who knows what is benefit 4 me. yes! in the month of ramazan devils are chained. those who wish to benefit in this month with sincerety will achieve it. those who rob are the ppl who dnt fear Allah n they do what they do according to their own will. not due to any waswas or anythin like tht. indeed u will come 2 know, n u wil b brought back to Allah, all of us. so fear the Day in which there will be no one to help u. death awaits us. n we will meet our Lord without a doubt.

  • muslimah says:

simon. mind ur own business n dnt bother abt our religion for the sake of finding fault with it( u won’t find a single 1, what u point out is not a fault, it’s just tht ur thinkin is too limited n biased so u dnt understand a thing). . i wud advise u 2 find faults with ur religion rather than our religion which is the true religion.

  • stranger says:

reason and religion, do they go well together?
“O ye who believe! Ask not questions about things which if made plain to you, may cause you trouble… Some people before you did ask such questions, and on that account lost their faith.” (Quran. 5:101-102)
    so much for rational thinking
