Qsim Ibrahim: the next president of Maldives?

August 9th, 2008 § 8 comments

Qasim Ibrahim aka Burumaa Qasim is one of the richest figures in the country who is also a respected philanthropist. He could perhaps be explained as a person who has build his own empire from scratch and he did not use all his wealth for himself, but chose to share it with those in need. Qasim has and is still helping a high percentage of students to study and pursue their dreams by providing them with study loans and scholarships. Also Qasim is well known for helping people who can’t afford medical treatments.

The news that Qasim might be competing in the next presidential election brought happiness to many Maldivians. A man who has garnered the love of many people; and so who would not be happy to make him the leader of the country!

Though, some might say that he does not have the ‘material’ to be a president. What do these people mean by ‘material’ I do not know, but in my point of view, Qasim has what it takes to be a president of Maldives. The current situation of Maldives, where we are experiencing a major downfall in the economy, Qasim seems to be the ideal person to lead the country.

It is not a ‘political figure’ that we need now, but a political plus a business minded person who could tackle the current economical crisis that we are facing currently, of course with the help of…all the citizens!

Business minded and being economy-literate are two very different thing! If you had spent even five minutes of the day with him while he attended a conference call or something, you will realize while he is not the man for the job! The fact that he could not handle the FINANCE ministry portfolio should again suffice!

If he were to hire somebody to be his president using his wealth, then maybe the country may benefit, because that’s how he runs Villa as well. His empire was built on the good graces of this regime, and through a series of fall-outs and almost always riding on the World Bank’s shoulder.

A man who is to take the top job in a nation, should not only have the respect and admiration of the people (how many philanthropists are presidents in the world? and how many businessmen are? the latter is the right answer), but he should be well versed and educated. The man will be a disgrace to the country if he heads our interactions with foreign governments. Gasim, if he is a well wisher of the Maldivian people, then he should put his financial support behind an ideal presidential candidate, and he should step back. It is no secret, that all his generosity and benevolence all these years was based on his not-so-secret desire to be Mr.President.

Now, we see a republican party being formed by Businessmen- for businessmen! And since many so called politicians realize that’s where all the money to be made is, they are all rushing to join- and it has overnight become the majority opposition in parliament!
Typical, and a sad day again for ordinary Maldivians.

If this is democracy I want no part of it.
