‘They have experienced the transformation of the country from abject poverty to the highest levels of prosperity in the South Asian region’ said Gayyom, the president who has ruled Maldives for the past thirty years, and this is the reason, according to him, why he would be elected for a seventh term without any doubt!

Well spoken I agree, but are we experiencing the ‘highest levels of prosperity’? When I say we, I do not include the high level post holders of Gayyoms government, of course they live to the highest of levels! When they have a fever, they get treated at Singapore. Their children could study at United Kingdom and live happily there with the family, and nothing do they know about the situation of fellow Maldivians.

But us, the general public, and particularly the people living in islands other then the capital of Maldives, we are striving to the last drop of sweat each and every day. Striving for what: to overcome hunger, to provide our children with a better education, to save ourselves from diseases. Diseases that the so called doctors at our health centers don’t even know about! And is that providing us with state of the art health facilities?

And now with the increasing prices of basic needs we are to strangle ourselves in order to get the three daily meals. And what about the increasing number of criminals, the druggies, the rapists, the looters: the few coins that we earn are stolen by those bloody people, who are so freely ruling the streets of Maldives! The children we feed with lovingness, tender and caring are raped, molested and slaughtered by these people. Is it providing us with security? If so, well done!

If that is what you mean by ‘highest levels of prosperity’ then you have spoken the truth. But in my opinion what our life today is no more then a person who only lacks the key to a gold container right in front of him! Yes, we have the resources, we have educated people, all we need is a good leader, the key, who could listen to our needs and help us open the container and share the gold equally.

But if you think that our life today is to ‘the highest levels of prosperity’ then I have to say, you are misinformed!
