Let justice prevail, though the heavens may fall

It was great news that the ‘would-be-assassin’ (Murshid) was convicted and sentenced to a 13 year jail term. However there are blabbers blabbering that this was all a show off. Some speak of it as a well planned event by the current government to recuperate support and sympathy for the current president of Maldives, Gayyom who is believed to have lost support of the majority of Maldivians. However in my point of view, what ever an agenda behind it might be, what we all saw was this young man trying to stab the president of our beloved country, with a knife, and should he not be punished for what he tried to do? I applaud the decision of the court, and it seems that justice has been served.

Whatsoever one thing I’d like to highlight is how fast the trail has ended! The spineless act occurred on the 8th of January ‘08, the trail started on 11th of May ‘08 Murshid was sentenced on 29th July ’08. Another four people were sentenced to death on the same day (29th July ’08) for the murder of 20 year old Shihab. However, this particular murder took place two years back, in 2006. What made this trail so lengthy? Should justice not be served equally to all, independent of who is in question or who is the victim? Where are the people because of whom we could not walk safe on the streets? Where are the people because of whom we could not sleep at nights? Where are the people because of whom we could not . . . do anything in peace and harmony? Why are they still roaming the roads freely? “Let justice prevail, though the heavens may fall”!
