Proud to be Maldivian, proud to be Muslim!

Last I was at Maldives about one and a half years back. The Male’ that I witnessed represented nothing Islamic other then the mosques scattered throughout the land. Most of the time the television was on it was some half naked ladies dancing and singing and the radio, some meaning less blabbering and music. Rarely do they broadcast something related to the religion and if they did, it was some politically religious stuff! Ah ah ah

I met many a friends of mine and there was no topic missed since I met them after a long time. Since our beloved Maldives is a 100% Muslim country some talks were about religion and I noticed that although they hate the person who said “islam sucks” so much that they would strangle the fellow, they do not even know the five pillars of Islam… Yes! The condition of the 100% Muslim nation! When a person says buruga is not important we want to hang him with a burugaa! Yet we don’t even know how to pray, or don’t even remember the last time we entered a mosque… at least with a good intention! And hell, we are so proud to be a people of a 100% Muslim nation!

Why this mentality? What made us so barbaric? Who made us believe that saying sha’hadah and smoking marijuana all day long raping women and stealing would make us people of paradise! And why does our temper reach beyond readable limits when we hear a person talk against Islam? Is it faith, or is it the way our minds are structured? Couple of year’s back, while I was studying at Majeediya, I saw a hadith that would make the reader believe that the earth is a flat surface and so I questioned about it to the Islam teacher. His answer was “At the time of the Prophet, people were not that educated, and so those words are in such a way that they would understand”! My curiosity made me ask another question “Isn’t Islam for all…for the people yet to come?” And then he gave the ultimate answer, “Questioning about Islam in such a way is inappropriate and unacceptable!” His tone symbolized anger, and although my question remained unsolved I was forced to stop it there.

What I am trying to say is it is this sort of feedback that we get since we were kids! It is either ‘don’t question about God’ or some anger that we have to face! Thus our knowledge is limited and we are taught to raise anger when we here certain types of exclamations. We were taught not to learn! We were asked not to question about other religions, not to venture other religions. All we were taught is that other religions are wrong and to hate those who say something bad or wrong about Islam! And so yes, it is not surprising we would kill for our religion without even knowing the basics of it, but the fact is, it is saddening!

  • brain surgery is what we need.

  • the reason i believe is the 100% muslim and related myths that have been fed to us for 30 years, through radio,tv,textbooks, sermons, lectures, even our independence day speeches revolves around this, while our hero is totally ignored.we have lost our identity.now they have passed from the majilis that only muslims can be citizens of maldives.

this was at first an exploitation of religion for political gains.but now a huge skyscraper is being built upon this foundation.perhaps you will be surprised to see how islamic maldivians are becoming now.or maybe you will be beheaded for this post you have written about the maaivegenvaaislaamdheen, before you notice it.intolerance is what i find in maldives now.

hehe. Thoyyib. You also an atheist?. The sheeple of Dawkins is making a lot of noise lately under the false pretense of anonymity on the internet.Maldives has no place for any other religion and that is how it will be no matter how you guys whine and cry about it.

  • The stimulus-response you described is something people have been conditioned with and your teacher’s responses surely wasn’t in vain. Male’ surely is changing – for better or worse…

  • wasy

    i believe its how maldivians r groomed..hihi

  • By Maldivian standards I am a better Muslim than most people I know. And that is saying a lot. :)

Maldives is at cross roads religiously and politically. A bunch of bearded fellows are spoiling the progres made. We would be lucky if we don’t end up like Afghnistan and Pakistan. We used to be good muslims and now everything has chnaged. To some people women are naked unless they wear a buruga. Some political parties are taking credit for convincing the majority of women to wear a Buruga. Where are we heading? I am scared for the anger and intolerence of a minority of our people when said something uninslamic, according their view.

Religioin and clerics. Please don’t mess with the politics and keep quite!

there is no hadith tht means tht the world is flat. the prophet did not talk in his own. it was revelation from Allah. Allah says in the qur’an in surah an-najm verse 1. by the star when it goes down, (or vanishes).
    2. Your companion (Muhammad Sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe Wa Sallam) has neither gone astray nor has erred.
    3. nor does He speak of (his own) desire.
    4. it is Only an Inspiration that is inspired.
so tell me the hadith u r claimin it says earth is flat. without any proof, just saying will not make us believe u. n u shud also note tht there are fabricated hadiths also. a hadith can b accepted by examinig it v carefuly, scholars(muhaddith) can do so. n i m 100% sure there wil b no such thing against proven scientific facts or human nature or about this universe. in islam we dont follow blindly. we submit willingly by knowing that this is the truth from our Lord. n islam doesnt ask us not to study abt other religion. whoever asked u nt to learn abt our religion has nt askd to do a good thing. v shud know God, but there shud b a limit 2 questioning as our limited mind will nt make us think abt the unseen. v must kno abt the attributes of our Lord. v dnt hav 2 question abt how He looks like, v will never understand n our mind will make resemblance to His creation so v wil be makin a mistake as there is nothin like unto Him. we humans tend to think abt things tht we experience in our lives. for eg: u just think abt sumthin u r afraid of but u hav neva seen it. u will put to it eyes, mouth n so as these things are known through ur life. wateva u draw it will hav some resemblance to things u hav once seen in ur life. this is how our minds r so limited to experiences n wat v hav seen. if v study other religions v wil get more faith as v wil realise tht the truth is islam. tell me a religion in this world tht is truly n truly frm God(without any faults in it, a religion tht is in accordance with the human nature) except islam! oh Allah! do not turn away our hearts after U hav guided us! make our hearts firm in Your religion n in Your obedience! Aaameen yaa Rabb!

    dear muslimah
the Qur’an challenges, established scientific facts. In many places, it alludes to the fact that the earth is flat and its mountains are like poles which create a balance so that the Earth does not tilt. Let us consider what the Qur’an says about the Earth:

In chapter 88:17,20, it is recorded,

“Will they not regard the camels how they are created…and the Earth how it is spread?”
‘how it is spread’, he denotes that the earth is flat. All the scholars of Islamic law agree upon this. It is not round as the physicists claim.”
In the Qur’an (chapter 50:7), we find another verse which carries the same meaning,
“And the earth have we spread out, and have flung firm hills therein” (Surah Qaf: 7).
This is accompanied by the same comment by the above Muslim scholars (refer to Jalalan, p. 437; Baydawi, p. 686, Tabari, p. 589, and Zamakhshari, part 4, p. 381). All of them assure us that “if it were not for these unshakable mountains, the earth would slip away.”

also, the Qur’an says that one of the righteous men of God’s servants saw the sun set in a certain place of the earth—in particular a well full of water and mud. There, this man found some people. Let us read what is recorded in the Qur’an (chapter “the Cave”, verse 86),

“When he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring and found a people thereabout. We said: ‘O Dhul-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness”’ (Surah 18:86).

if I had failed to understand what the Qur’an meant by these strange words, referring to the famous students of the Qur’an as well as to the ancient scholars. I discovered that all of them concurred with this rendering and said that Muhammad’s friends inquired about the sunset and that he gave them that answer. All the scholars such as the Baydawi, Jalalan, and Zamakhshari confirm it..
