The Battle of Himandhoo
A paradise, like many of you, I thought Maldives is. But on the peaceful and tranquil lands, patches of darkness started rooting since a long time back. A cult of men, who believed all but they are infidels, slowly and gradually increased in number. Their belief; kill the infidels, live for eternity in paradise with unlimited number of houris.
Alas, on the land of Himandhoo, they have shown at least for once their true faces. They have raised their swords chanting “Allah Akbar”. On the 7th of October, they confronted the Maldivian security forces. Their weapons; wooden planks, stone, fire balls, and swords! Covered their faces with masks and heads protected with helmets, they are the militants of God they might have thought. “Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar”, they chanted promising to fight ‘till the last man’ to protect a mosque which, in reality, no one wanted to destroy or damage.
On day one, when the negotiations between the two ‘armies’ failed, and when the army of God did not react to the warnings of the police; the police charged and initiated the fight. Initially one would believe that the cults were stronger. The police were able to seize about five of them while a number of police were injured: cracked heads, broken shoulders, sliced fingers and so on. The resistance of the cult was so strong that the police had to pace back, at least for a while. And at this moment the media covering the events were removed from the island as they might be in danger. And it was told that a police man was held hostage by the cults.
The police was helped by the Maldivian army when the battle moved into its second day. As the media was not covering the events, the actual events of the battle after the removal of ‘media’ are unconfirmed. It was said that the cult willingly give-up the hostage and surrendered without further confrontation.
I had to ask myself, these people who had children in their front line, who are they? Are they extremists? Or is it the real teaching of Islam? Does Islam teach them to put their young children in the front line during battle? For them it might have been a holly battle. But in reality it was nothing but blood that they had shed for no reason whatsoever. And they should be ashamed of themselves, for that they aren’t asked to save a mosque. If it is a place of God, God Himself will save it. They did not have to put their very own children in danger, nor did they have to risk their own lives.
And now when they have to spend days and months and years in jails who will feed their children and their wives? Alas, they are blind, they ignorant!
