Democracy

The word democracy is originated from the Greek ??????????-demokratia. “Demos” mean people and “Kratos” means rule, hence literally democracy means “rule by the people”. A lot of countries claim that they are democratic, yet only a few countries truly are democratic. And some would even argue or debate, “is there a single democratic country in the whole world?” If I am to answer that question, well I will not be able to answer with a yes or no…because I doubt that there is a fully democratic country around the globe.

Anyhow thinking about democracy, what came to my mind was freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is described as “human right to voice one’s opinion publicly without fear of censorship or punishment” Freedom of speech in my point of view is one of the key tools of democracy as it is what truly builds a democracy. How can people rule without voicing their needs? How can people change a government if they are unable to criticize the government that they have elected? A petition can make a voice louder then a letter and incases that becomes necessary. And peaceful and well organized protests sometimes become necessary in order to make the leaser hear what the citizens wish for. Sometimes internet becomes a better media to make people aware as many of the radio and TV stations are controlled! Yet some governments ignore the voices and still try to prove that they are democrats? What the…

Whatsoever, a question still remains. How far is the freedom of speech extended to? Can anybody say anything at anywhere at anytime? Or should there be nay limitations to this very basic right? How far can a person criticize a government? Or its decisions? What when the citizens have different ideas on a single problem? Vote? 51 votes to 49 votes!! Who wins? 51? And is it seriously democracy because there is just a single person extra on one side?
